The Real Thing:
Peggi Kroll-Roberts

Peggi Kroll-Roberts knows what it's like to have a consuming career as a painter and raise three children while she's at it.

Most of her works are smaller, which has helped. And her subject matter is often the things that fill her home: flowers from the garden, a butter dish in the kitchen, tubes of lipstick -- and her kids.

"I had to figure out a way to do the kids and paint, so I painted them by the pool, watching TV, everywhere," she says.

As for her unusual still-life subjects, she adds, "I can't get excited about typical still lifes. I have to find something that excites me. I wouldn't paint a muffin next to a pearl necklace because I never come across that. What I come across is my daughters' nail polish and fake jewelry. Or a vase of flowers."

"I have to sort of 'believe' in what I'm painting," she says.
