The Modern
Landscape
I am attracted to the colors, shapes and light found in the hills and coastlines of California. I try to capture the essence of what I see in vibrant and confident brush strokes. Each small plein air study, done one after another, is further simplified to remove unnecessary detail and focus on expressing the fundamental elements of what I see. I use strong color and bold brush strokes to tell my story.
I am influenced by the Society of Six painters, from the early 20th century, who created a modern California landscape style full of expressive brushwork and vivid color. My paintings are a statement of my love of the landscape that defines natural California.
