I am attracted to the colors, shapes and light found in the rolling hills and along the coastline of California. I try to capture the essence of what I see in vibrant and confident brush strokes. Each small plein air study, done one after another, is further simplified to remove unnecessary detail and focus on expressing the fundamental elements of what I see. I use strong color and bold brushstrokes to tell my story.
More recently I have begun incorporating figures into my abstracted landscapes, including a series of musicians.
I am influenced by the Society of Six painters from the early 20th century, who created a modern California landscape style full of expressive brushwork and vivid color. My paintings are a statement of my love of the landscape that defines natural California and the people who inhabit it.
